Indigofera Tinctoria/ Strobilanthes Cusia
Dyestuff: Indigotin
Plant part used: Leaves
Resulting Colours: Indigo Blues
Grown around the world, Indigo is truly a universal dyestuff - its story woven through the fields of agriculture, science, art and botany. Few natural materials have travelled so widely, or held such a singular place in human history. Across cultures, indigo has carried spiritual meaning, adorned bodies and textiles, and become an everyday icon worn across the globe as denim.
Its pigment, indigotin, emerges from hundreds of species: from Indigofera Tinctoria in India, to Polygonum Tinctoria in Japan, and Woad, native to Europe. Coveted for centuries, indigo is a colour of transformation. From the vat, the cloth emerges green, then slowly turns blue as it meets the air - a beautiful moment of natural alchemy.
Cultivation in the Himalayas
Alongside Madder, Indigo is the only plant that’s actively cultivated in the Himalayas. Seeded in spring, it's harvested right after the monsoon in late summer.

We do the research…
Working with Avani
So far our research into finding trusted suppliers of natural dyes has allowed us to build a strong relationship with the people working at Avani.
After multiple visits and many seasonal obstacles we made it to the deep rural landscapes in Uttarakhand. Here we were able to meet the farmers, and gain a deeper understanding of what is involved in maintaining this level of sustainability. This community of people are dedicated to preserving traditional craft and sustainable textile resources.
Our Packaging
Each pouch of dye you receive is 100% biodegradable & compostable. The airtight zip lock keeps your dyes fresh so they’re always ready to use.
Our aim
we aim to contine our research in the search for cooperatives around the world that we believe in and trust and provide a fully traceable supply chain so that you know exactly where and who is benefitting from each purchase of our selected natural dyes.
